Chairwoman Johnson Applauds House Passage of PRECIP Act
(Washington, DC)—Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1437, which includes the Providing Research and Estimates of Changes in Precipitation (PRECIP) Act. This bipartisan, bicameral legislation addresses the destructive and deadly impacts of extreme precipitation across the country by directing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to provide comprehensive and regularly updated Federal precipitation information. The PRECIP Act was introduced by Environment Subcommittee Chair Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) with Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) as an original cosponsor.
“The changes in precipitation we have felt across the country will only worsen with climate change,” said Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX). “We have seen extreme precipitation events that cause communities to quickly uproot, leaving behind their homes, schools, and businesses. These events can have long-term effects as well on families, communities, and business owners across the country. As climate change continues to bring on more extreme weather, we must equip ourselves with the best data to tackle this growing issue. I am pleased the House passed the PRECIP Act to address gaps in accurate precipitation estimates and improve best practices needed for precipitation estimation studies. This bill reflects our continued bipartisan and bicameral commitment to better understanding and addressing extreme precipitation events.”
